One80 Youth Media

Social Enterprise for Canada established One80 in the fall of 2002 as a Boys & Girls Club initiative across Canada.

One80 quickly became Canada’s largest news medium circulated by youth, for youth. Working with an audience of youth 14-24 years of age, One80 educated young people in ways to better engage their communities and confront important local issues through a thorough and ethical practice in civic journalism and broadcast media.

Topics ranged from social justice to education, entertainment to lifestyle – One80 weighed in on all subjects that matter and impact youth. Each news assignment, feature or special section that eventually made up content for One80 was established through youth input or focus groups and further vetted through weekly editorial meetings. All non-opinion articles involved expert sources and each article was further supported by experienced staff members who provided assignment direction.

One80 was guided by an important set of core values that included inclusion & opportunity; respect & belonging; empowerment; collaboration and speaking out.

Focusing on the development of youth-led media products and a volunteer media education curriculum supporting literacy and civic engagement through journalism, One80 grew from a local initiative to a province-wide venture for youth.

One80 further established its credibility when it received the Ontario Community Newspaper Association Award for ‘Best New Youth Publication’ in 2003, and the Bell Canada Award of Excellence in 2004.
