INTRODUCING Settlement Series.ca
Settlement Series.ca was conceived and created to empower newcomers and create better access to crucial governmental services. Hosting the entire Digital Settlement Series in a user-friendly web environment provides applicants with the opportunity to work through the forms independently prior to or after visiting a service office, streamlining the process for applicants and support staff.
After numerous consultations with front line settlement and supporting agency staff, the original concept was for a digital product that would help staff assist clients more efficiently when completing an application process. This would allow staff more time to focus on other identified settlement issues. The concept has now evolved into a tool that permits the client to work independently from any location via web access.
The multilingual format provides a user-friendly interface that helps simplify the process. The descriptive terminology used in the videos is consistent throughout all the selected forms and is supported by culturally relevant imagery as well as written text. The clear messaging and detailed explanation shortens the time required to complete the application and reduces errors due to contextual misinterpretation. The applicant is able to independently manage the task in a manner and environment that is comfortable.
If the digital format is used in a Settlement Office setting, staff are free to address other supporting service needs the client may have while the client completes the process. The scrolling English and French subtitles help staff identify the applicant’s progress and assist when necessary. If the applicant chooses to complete the application externally, there are links and contacts accessible through the website that can provide information not covered in the video.
The end result is clear understanding of the application process, a completed application that is factually correct and the added value provided by effective time management.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is responsible for immigration, settlement, resettlement, citizenship and multiculturalism programs and services in Canada and has funded and sanctioned the development of the Settlement Series since its inception in 2010.
