Our organization has evolved from a grassroots neighbourhood centre that was formally incorporated in 1986 under the name of Vaughan Neighbourhood Support Centre Inc. and registered as a not-for-profit corporation with a charitable status. The centre operated a family resource centre and provided a hub for other service providers.
In 1997, our name changed to York Region Neighbourhood Services Inc. (YNS) in recognition of our growing mandate and service profile. In June 2007, the Board moved to a final name change to Social Enterprise for Canada, which reflects our present day distinctiveness and purpose as a social enterprise, while supporting a consistent organizational identity that includes both our charitable and business structures.
SEC now serves over 15,000 unique individuals each year through its service divisions and supports more than 100 other service agencies through its community development work and business operation.
Our team is comprised of approximately 125 employees with an annual budget of approximately $3 million. With a reputation as a fast moving organization, we have a proven track record for developing and advancing short term and long term programs and services that respond to community needs, government mandates, or organizational capacity development.
